JR Richards is the original lead singer and primary songwriter of Dishwalla — the band behind "Counting Blue Cars" (written by JR; Billboard Mainstream Rock Song of the Year 1996; two ASCAP Rock Track of the Year awards, 1997 and 1998; RIAA Gold-certified single; 68 million Spotify streams) and the RIAA Gold-certified debut album Pet Your Friends.
Across his Dishwalla and solo careers he has recorded 10 full-length albums — five with Dishwalla (Pet Your Friends 1995, And You Think You Know What Life's About 1998, Opaline 2002, Live...Greetings From The Flow State 2003, and the self-titled "Dishwalla 5" in 2005) and five as a solo artist (A Beautiful End 2009, Honore et Amore 2015, Stripped 2016, Under The Cover 2018, My Darkest Hour 2025). His catalog also includes Min's Playlist Vol. 1 (2021 solo retrospective), Maxi Disc editions of A Beautiful End and Dishwalla 5, multiple EPs, singles, soundtrack contributions, and a full instrumental library registered with ISRCs.
His music has been placed in over 60 film and television productions across NBC, CBS, ABC, WB, FOX, MTV, VH1, CW, and Amazon Prime — from American Pie (1999), Charmed (1999), and Smallville (2002–2005) to How I Met Your Mother (2012), the SAF3 main title and eight additional songs (2013), Criminal Minds (2013), and Baywatch Remastered (18 original songs, 2018). His production credits extend beyond his own catalog: he produced Amy Grant's "Big Yellow Taxi" for A&M Records in 1997, and has produced records for artists across the US, UK, and Asia, including Warner Brothers Asia releases.
JR continues to tour internationally both solo and with his touring band.
He has trained in Bel Canto technique under vocal coach Ron Anderson (Adele, Axl Rose, Steven Tyler) for 30 years.
